Black-and-White Looks That Still Have a Lot to Say
Very small, light things break the monotony of black and white.
There are things you only see after all color has disappeared. White and black are hard to simply call 'colors.' Just as an ink landscape painting creates depth without using color, these two tones become light and shadow themselves. What painters handle first when preparing a canvas, and the way photographers read the world, ultimately begin here. Black and white, negative space and line, silence and speech. When fashion chooses these two hues a similar thing happens: it's not merely choosing a color but selecting a certain 'texture.'
Black conceals, white reveals. When the two are together in one outfit, the look doesn't need a long explanation. You can see at a glance where something ends, where it begins, and how the proportions flow. It's not an easy combination, but strangely it looks effortless.
The black-and-white seen on the streets these days is a little different from before. Instead of perfectly ironed shirts or flawlessly tailored sets, there's a certain looseness. You might casually throw a black knit over white wide pants, or wear a black jacket and shoes with a white slip skirt. Lace details slip in here and there, and oversized silhouettes loosen the whole thing. Minimal but not taut. That's what black and white want to say right now.
What makes that ease interesting is that black and white are being expressed much more lightly without losing their inherent solidity. When these calm, deep two colors take on a free mood, perhaps that's the most honest face of minimalism. Even without having a lot in a flashy way, even without thinking a lot in a noisy way, black and white are always where they belong.
People often say black and white don't follow trends. That's half true and half false. They don't just stay put; they undergo slight variations each season. This season the relaxed mood is dominant. And strangely, right now black and white are what you most want to wear.
