This Fall, Brown Is Deep and Sweet Like Dark Chocolate
Share
This fall, I'm going deep and rich.

When you take a bite of dark chocolate, it's bitter at first and then the sweetness gradually rises. That's exactly the feeling of this fall's dark brown. From afar it looks heavy and solemn, but up close you can see a subtle sweetness hidden inside. Not all browns are the same. If camel or beige tones are the safe, harmless side, dark brown sinks a tone lower and carries a more profound flavor. After spending the whole summer chasing white and sheer things, as soon as the weather cools everyone returns to deep, mellow browns—making brown feel like a switch that automatically flips on in this season.

The domain of chocolate brown this fall is much wider than you might think. It has absorbed every kind of outerwear—bomber jackets, blazers, trench coats, leather jackets—and is creeping onto pants, loafers, and bags as well. It's not a color that shines for just one season; rather, it stains layer by layer, steadily expanding its momentum.

That momentum reached the runways. Houses as different in sensibility as Saint Laurent, Miu Miu, Acne, Maison Margiela, and Hermès all gathered this season around dark brown. From glossy leather to knits, materials and styles vary, but they all speak the same color. It reaffirms that chocolate brown is a color that slips in effortlessly anywhere.

Styling-wise, surprisingly, dark brown takes less effort. Placed next to black leather the tonal difference is minimal, giving a weighty fall; paired with jeans and flats it becomes a casual autumn look. It's flexible enough to wear even with wide-leg training pants.

Blazers or leather and suede jackets are of course nice, but in early fall like now, lighter-material trench coats or work jackets are more useful. Since it's not full winter yet, lighter silhouettes suit the season better than thick outerwear. Pairing with black or white creates a minimalist mood without adding more color. Dark brown pairs well with neutrals, so it shouldn't be a particularly difficult combination.

The final twist comes from color combinations. The effect chocolate brown produces when mixed with pastel tones exceeds imagination. An oversized dark brown jacket with a clear sky-blue accent feels fresh, and even wearing just one pair of yellow socks with brown loafers brightens the mood from the toes up.
